London-based Big Mum’s Samosas is making waves this festive season with a plethora of orders to fulfil. Founded in 2020 during the Covid lockdown, the company has grown to deliver handmade samosas across the UK.

Staff are particularly busy around occasions like Christmas, as co-founder Sushma Rani Makol explains: “We’ve been making samosas together for a long time for family occasions, community events and children’s birthdays. People who come to our house love them. They love my samosas because my dough is very thin. It’s the dough that makes them melt for my samosas. Because the dough is handmade.”

Limited edition flavours have been introduced for the festive season, including roast turkey and stuffing, as well as fruit pie. The dough used for the samosas is completely handmade, which staff say has contributed to the success of the business.

Since its launch, the business has gained exposure on social media, which co-founder Esha Abhol says is no surprise: “We knew the product was good. We knew our local community loved it, but we just wanted to modernise it, make it more fun and that’s why we started Big Mum’s Samosas, but the feedback and support we’ve received during lockdown and up until now has been so overwhelming that we know this product works. We know this dough is truly unique,” ​​says Abhol.

Makol is now retired and the business is run by his grandchildren; three generations of his family now work together to serve customers. This intergenerational hand-down has strengthened the family bond and passion for cooking, ensuring that every samosa Big Mum’s Samosas produces is of exceptional quality.
