“The recent inauguration of the new building for pretrial detainees at the Bukavu General Prosecutor’s Office marks an important step towards more humane detention conditions that respect fundamental rights. Thanks to this project funded by MONUSCO, detainees will finally have access to adequate sanitation facilities, a more comfortable space and a healthier environment.
This initiative is part of an essential approach aimed at guaranteeing respect for the rights of detainees, while ensuring their physical and mental well-being. Indeed, pretrial detention conditions were often criticized for their unsanitary conditions and promiscuity, endangering the dignity and health of detainees.
The Attorney General at the Bukavu Court of Appeal stressed the importance of not transforming these places of detention into real remand centers, insisting on the need to preserve respect for the rights of detainees and to maintain an environment conducive to their reintegration into society.
Thanks to this investment by MONUSCO, amounting to 51,000 US dollars, the judicial authorities will be able to guarantee detention conditions that are dignified and in line with international standards. This initiative demonstrates the commitment of the international community to support the efforts of local institutions to improve the judicial system and ensure respect for human rights.
Ultimately, the construction of this new building for preventive detainees at the Bukavu General Prosecutor’s Office represents a significant step forward in the promotion of justice and respect for fundamental rights. This investment will contribute to improving the detention conditions of persons awaiting trial, while promoting their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. A step towards a more humane and equitable justice system for all.”
