The information and awareness-raising efforts led by the World Health Organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo to combat Mpox, an epidemic disease, are taking on significant proportions in the Limete commune in Kinshasa. Indeed, an awareness-raising morning was held on December 19, bringing together community leaders, pastors, school principals and influential members of the Pakadjuma community.

The objective of this approach was above all to deconstruct the false information circulating around Mpox, also called chickenpox, to provide these key actors with the elements necessary to disseminate reliable and accurate information within their community. Salif Diarra, infodemic manager of the WHO regional office in Africa, emphasizes the importance of correcting rumors and confusion surrounding this disease to promote better understanding among the population.

The need to believe in the existence of Mpox and the effectiveness of the available vaccine was highlighted during this meeting, while recalling the essential protective measures to be adopted, such as regular hand washing and compliance with health instructions. In addition, WHO plans to extend these awareness sessions to other provinces of the country, in order to guarantee widespread access to quality information.

The latest statistical data from the Ministry of Health show a slight increase in suspected cases of Mpox, with 750 cases reported in week 50. Since the beginning of the epidemic, the DRC has recorded a significant number of cases, both confirmed and suspected, with a slightly decreasing case fatality rate.

These figures illustrate the need for collective mobilization to deal with this epidemic and underline the importance of raising awareness and educating the population. The prevention and communication work carried out by WHO and its local partners is of paramount importance in the fight against Mpox.

In conclusion, the fight against Mpox in the DRC requires close collaboration between health authorities, international organizations and the population itself. Informing, raising awareness and educating are essential actions to stop the spread of this disease and ensure the health and well-being of all.
