Urgent action: Protecting civilians in Irumu from attacks by armed groups

The territory of Irumu, in the province of Ituri in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has once again been the scene of an unbearable tragedy. Five innocent and defenseless civilians were victims of a deadly ambush by suspected ADF in Mafifi, a town located on the Komanda-Luna axis. Among the victims was even a two-year-old child, whose peaceful destiny was brutally interrupted.

This cruel attack raises once again the question of the security of the populations in this region plagued by incessant violence. The inhabitants of Walesse Vonkutu and neighboring towns live in constant fear of attacks by armed groups, which sow terror and chaos. Local and national authorities must take drastic measures to protect civilians and put an end to this spiral of violence.

The Convention for the Respect of Human Rights (CRDH) has called on the joint forces to intensify their operations against the rebels in the region. It is imperative to track down and neutralize these armed groups that are putting the lives of so many innocent people at risk. Justice must be served, and the perpetrators must be brought to justice to answer for their heinous acts.

In these dark times, the solidarity and support of local and international communities is essential to help the victims, but also to promote peace and security in the region. It is time to join forces to put an end to this unacceptable violence and allow the people of Irumu to live in peace and security.
