Fatshimetrie: New humanitarian crisis in Lubero, North Kivu, following the M23 rebel offensive – Massive population displacements, critical humanitarian situation
The Lubero region of North Kivu is once again facing a serious security crisis caused by the offensive of the M23 rebels, who recently took control of several villages, including Matembe, Butsorovya, Mambasa and Alimbongo. These violent clashes with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have forced many inhabitants, mostly women and children, to flee their homes, thus aggravating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The military administrator of Lubero reported a massive influx of displaced people, some regrouping on the outskirts of Lubero-centre and Butembo-Beni, while others have found refuge in these neighboring towns. This precarious situation requires urgent management by local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of the displaced population.
Colonel Kiwewa Mitela Alain, Administrator of Lubero Territory, appealed to young people to ensure the safety of humanitarians in the area. He stressed that the real enemy remains the M23/RDF, not the humanitarian organizations that provide crucial support to the local population. He urged young people to act responsibly and behave as future leaders of society.
The rapid deterioration of the humanitarian situation in southern Lubero is alarming. Living and health conditions, already precarious, are at risk of further deterioration with the increasing influx of displaced people and the continuing instability in the area. Humanitarian organizations are sounding the alarm about an imminent crisis, as the basic needs of the population become increasingly difficult to meet.
The occupation of localities by rebels on National Road No. 2 leading to Lubero-centre raises serious concerns. Although some areas remain under FARDC control, such as Mbingi and Mbwanvinywa, the situation remains precarious. In Luofu, the armed forces share control with the rebels, leaving uncertainty over the future of the region.
This new humanitarian crisis in Lubero underscores the urgency of concerted measures to protect displaced populations, ensure access to humanitarian aid and restore stability in the region. It is imperative that the international community support the efforts of the Congolese authorities to resolve this crisis and prevent any further escalation of violence and human suffering.
