The inhabitants of the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo are once again facing the threat of the M23 rebels. Indeed, the latter recently occupied the city of Buleusa, an event that plunges the population into fear and uncertainty.
The situation is critical and alarming, as the rebels have carried out several attacks in the region, causing the death of innocent civilians and forcing the inhabitants to flee their villages. The leader of the Ikobo group, Mwami Godefroid Likanga Makasi, testifies to the violence his community is facing. He reports that the M23 carried out eight attacks in the region, before seizing Buleusa after clashes with the army. This escalation of violence raises fears of a general conflagration in the region, in view of the recent attacks carried out by the rebels.
The conquest of Buleusa comes shortly after an offensive by the M23 in the Lubero territory, thus marking a worrying advance for the security of the inhabitants. The occupation of Alimbongo, the army’s last stronghold in the region, has further weakened the situation and raised legitimate concerns among the local population.
Faced with this worrying situation, it is crucial that the authorities take rapid and effective measures to protect civilians and restore security in the region. The delivery of humanitarian aid to populations affected by the conflicts must also be a priority to avoid a major humanitarian crisis.
In conclusion, the current situation in North Kivu once again illustrates the persistent challenges to security and stability in this region of the DRC. It is imperative that sustainable and inclusive solutions are put in place to guarantee peace and security for local populations, who legitimately aspire to live in peace and harmony in their region.
