Reinforced Security: Mobilization Against Crime in Haut-Katanga

The security of the population in the Haut-Katanga province is currently a major concern. Indeed, the resurgence of crime, particularly in the cities of Lubumbashi, Likasi and Kasumbalesa, is worrying the authorities and civil society. The recent general parades and statements by police officials highlight an alarming situation that requires urgent action.

During the recent speech by General Dieudonné Ondimba Okito, Deputy Divisional Commissioner of the Police in Haut-Katanga, emphasis was placed on the need for increased collaboration between law enforcement, defense and security services, and the civilian population to combat urban banditry. It is clear that the police presence must be strengthened to ensure the protection of citizens and their property.

With this in mind, an alert has been issued to all units of the Congolese National Police in the province, ordering them to be on maximum alert for one month. This period, from December 15, 2024 to January 15, 2025, will be dedicated to the security and protection of the population. It is essential that each police officer be mobilized to prevent acts of crime and ensure a dissuasive presence on the ground.

Recognition of the efforts made by law enforcement is also important. General Okito Ondimba stressed at a recent meeting the need to combat corrupt elements within the police, by publicly exposing officers who have compromised themselves in the exercise of their duties. This transparency strengthens the population’s trust in the police authorities and shows determination to combat all forms of delinquency.

Faced with this rise in urban insecurity, collaboration between the authorities, law enforcement and civil society appears to be an essential pillar to guarantee the security of the inhabitants of Haut-Katanga. It is imperative to implement concerted actions and effective strategies to stem this scourge and restore a climate of tranquility and trust within local communities.

In short, the security situation in Haut-Katanga calls for general mobilization to ensure the protection of citizens and guarantee a safe and peaceful environment. The measures taken by the authorities and the involvement of all stakeholders are essential to counter crime and preserve the tranquility of the populations in this region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
