Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy unveils revolutionary energy project in Egypt

The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy in Egypt has launched an ambitious project to develop renewable energy in the country. With clear targets until 2040, the ministry aims to integrate 42% of renewable energy into the grid by 2030 and increase the total capacity to 65 GW by 2040. Projects for solar and wind power plants, as well as the introduction of nuclear energy, demonstrate the government’s commitment to a transition to a greener economy and a sustainable energy future.
The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has recently deployed important measures within the framework of a comprehensive and integrated vision, a practical strategy and security plans to exploit all natural and renewable energy sources. Minister Mahmoud Esmat made this statement on Saturday, December 14, 2024.

“We are launching a revolutionary renewable energy project in Egypt, with a capacity of 500 MW in Aswan. We promise a second phase with larger capacities, which will add additional power to the electricity grid and provide renewable energy during sunset hours,” he added during the inauguration of the Abydos 1 solar power plant project in Kom Ombo, in the presence of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli.

The ministry has implemented a strategy until 2030, aiming to integrate 42% of renewable energy into the grid by 2030. These figures will allow us to reach 14 GW of wind energy and 8.5 GW of solar energy, Esmat said.

Esmat hailed Abydos 1 as the first addition to the energy capacities already available. He mentioned plans to incorporate nuclear energy by 2029, with a capacity of about 4.8 GW, with the aim of reaching 22 GW of new and renewable energy by 2030, thus meeting the target of 42% of renewable energy in Egypt by that year.

Our commitment to renewable energy and new projects will continue until 2040, with a target of 40 GW of wind energy and about 25 GW of solar energy by then, for a total of 65 GW of renewable energy, the minister stressed.

He stressed that a renewable energy strategy had been established, ensuring grid stability through battery systems, as well as storage and discharge models.

Esmat also noted that the implementation stages of this strategy had begun in coordination with the Ministry of Petroleum to determine the available fossil fuel supplies and their potential uses.

He stressed that significant investments are being injected into connecting new renewable energy projects to the main grid and strengthening the grid’s capacity to accommodate renewable energy.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Fatshimetrie Energy Project in Egypt marks a crucial milestone in the country’s transition to a greener economy and sustainable energy future. These efforts demonstrate the government’s commitment to harnessing renewable resources to meet the country’s energy needs while contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
