**The Democratic Republic of Congo and Agriculture: Towards a New Dynamic**
During the State of the Nation address before Congress, President Félix Tshisekedi highlighted his desire to give new impetus to the Congolese agricultural sector. Indeed, the importance of agriculture in the country’s economy cannot be underestimated. By allocating more than 11% of the national budget to agricultural credits, the president is committed to promoting the growth of this vital sector for food self-sufficiency and economic development.
The establishment of the Agricultural Transformation Program (PTA-DRC) financed by the African Development Bank to the tune of $6.6 billion is a promising initiative. This program aims to modernize agricultural techniques, encourage synergies between the different actors in the sector and ensure better management of natural resources.
The revival of fishing and livestock farming is also a major challenge for food security and strengthening the local economy. By distributing inputs and equipping artisanal fishermen, the government is seeking to improve the productive capacities of this sector. In addition, the acquisition of eight industrial fishing boats and the development of eight poultry centers demonstrate the government’s ambition to encourage the growth of these sectors.
These initiatives reflect a strong political will to diversify the Congolese economy and guarantee food security for all. However, significant challenges remain, such as access to financing for small farmers, technical capacity building and the implementation of coherent and sustainable public policies.
In conclusion, the Democratic Republic of Congo seems to be engaged in a new dynamic to promote agriculture and boost the agri-food sector. By focusing on innovation, training and support for local stakeholders, the country is on the way to realizing its agricultural potential and contributing to the prosperity of its citizens.
