The Senate of the Democratic Republic of Congo has voted in favor of the ratification agreement establishing the Lobito Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency. This decision was taken during the plenary session of December 2, 2024, marking an important step in the development of transport infrastructure in the region.

The Lobito Agreement, signed between the DRC, Angola and Zambia on January 27, 2023, provides for the establishment of an agency to facilitate transit transport along the Lobito Corridor. This is a significant step forward in improving the efficiency of trade and promoting the economic development of the region.

The Foreign Relations Commission, responsible for examining the draft law ratifying the agreement, highlighted the strategic importance of the Lobito Corridor for the Congolese economy. Indeed, this corridor offers a less expensive alternative to other transport routes currently used by the DRC. This is particularly important in the context of a policy of economic openness and win-win partnerships.

Nevertheless, the Commission made recommendations aimed at maximizing the benefits of this agreement for the DRC. In particular, it stressed the need to accelerate the establishment of the internal East-West corridor, which would make it possible to connect the different regions of the country more efficiently.

This ratification of the Lobito Agreement marks a major step forward in the development of transport infrastructure in the DRC. By opening up to new partnerships and promoting the facilitation of transit transport, the DRC is strengthening its position on the regional and international economic scene.

This decision by the Senate demonstrates the determination of the Congolese authorities to boost the transport sector and promote regional trade. It opens up new prospects for the economic development of the DRC and strengthens its place as a key player in regional cooperation in Africa.
