A devastating fire on Monday, December 9, 2024, claimed the life of a 41-year-old man, identified as Abdulfatai, at number 158, Alaparun Compound, Isale Alore, Ilorin, Kwara State. The fire, which broke out at about 2am, engulfed a residential building containing 35 rooms.

According to authorities, the blaze was triggered by an ignition source in a room containing highly flammable materials, such as petrol, batteries and a tyre compressor. Abdulfatai, who was not a resident of the building, had come from Alate Compound in Abayawo to visit a friend and spend the night.

Unfortunately, he was trapped by the thick smoke and could not escape the fast-spreading fire. Firefighters later found that he had lost consciousness due to smoke inhalation and did not survive.

The Kwara State Fire Service responded promptly to the call for help received at 2:07am. Fire engines and teams rushed to the scene to fight the flames. Despite the intensity of the fire, firefighters managed to save 30 of the 35 rooms in the building, although five rooms were completely destroyed.

The team worked tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further. In a statement, PFO Hassan Adekunle, the spokesperson for the fire service, confirmed that Abdulfatai’s body had been recovered and handed over to his family. Investigations revealed that the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion in a room filled with combustible materials.

This tragic incident is a reminder of the critical importance of fire prevention and safety in homes. It highlights the dangers we face when safety standards are not followed and flammable materials are improperly stored.
