Mobondo militia violence in the DRC: Call for justice and peace

Recent news in the Democratic Republic of Congo reveals a new tragedy linked to violence perpetrated by the Mobondo militias. A brutal attack in the village of “Aviation”, in the territory of Kwamouth, resulted in the death of at least ten people, burned alive by the militias. Nine other survivors were also seriously injured, suffering from severe burns.

Local accounts indicate a hostage-taking followed by the arson of a house where the victims were being held. The survivors were rushed to the Kwamouth General Referral Hospital for specialized care. The damage caused by this barbaric attack once again highlights the persistent threat posed by the Mobondo militias in the region.

The elected national deputy of Kwamouth, Guy Musomo, expressed his dismay at this heinous act, stressing the urgency for the Congolese authorities to take drastic measures to eradicate the Mobondo threat. Despite previous efforts to stem this violence, the enigma remains as to the real instigators of these recurring attacks. An urgent appeal is made to the security services to identify and bring to justice those responsible for these violent actions.

In the Greater Bandundu region, the army is conducting Operation Ngemba with the aim of restoring peace and security. Recent clashes between the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and Mobondo militiamen in the Popokaba territory have already caused heavy human losses on both sides. The fighting led to the neutralization of several militiamen and the recovery of heavy weapons, but also resulted in the death of Congolese soldiers.

This escalation of violence highlights the fragility of the security situation in this region, underlining the imperative of concerted action to prevent new tragedies and protect vulnerable civilians. The call for justice and peace resonates strongly in a context marked by tragedy and mourning of a population prey to the terror of armed militias.

The Congolese authorities must redouble their efforts to put an end to this recurring violence and ensure the protection of civilian populations, victimized by armed groups with pernicious designs. The quest for stability and justice remains a major challenge for the Democratic Republic of Congo, faced with persistent insecurity that threatens the lives and dignity of its citizens.
