Over the course of 2019, Republicans have taken over the reins of power in Washington, holding full control of the government for the first time since early last year. With victories in the House, Senate, and White House, Republicans find themselves in a position of political strength, but with tight margins of maneuver in Congress.
To better understand the challenges ahead, I had the opportunity to speak with Lauren Fox, CNN’s congressional correspondent, who spends much of her time in the halls of the Capitol and the underground tunnels where lawmakers and senators intersect. Here is an excerpt of our interview, edited for smooth reading.
As for funding the government before January, it seems likely that the current Congress will need to find a transitional solution to keep funding flowing through the spring. This approach would avoid a major budget battle early in Donald Trump’s term, while also providing a transition period for new leadership.
The relationship between President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson could play a crucial role in preserving cohesion within the Republican Party. Trump’s support for Johnson could make it easier to pass the legislation Republicans want to advance their policy agenda.
However, the task ahead for Republicans is daunting given the fragmented makeup of the current Congress. Compromises and adjustments are likely to be necessary to bridge party divides and secure the votes needed to advance major reforms.
Ultimately, the Trump administration’s legislative success will depend on its ability to navigate the turbulent waters of American politics while balancing competing interests within the Republican Party. The coming months promise to be full of twists and turns and challenges, pointing to an eventful 2019 in Washington.
