Fatshimetrie is pleased to present an exclusive look at the ongoing restoration work at the Temple of Esna in Luxor and the Temple of Edfu in Aswan, Egypt. These two remarkable sites are full of unique historical and architectural treasures, and the efforts made to preserve and restore their former splendor are worthy of recognition.
Since the restoration of the Temple of Esna began in 2018, significant progress has been made. The work has notably restored the ceiling paintings depicting ancient constellations and the goddess Nut, as well as salvaged 18 of the temple’s 24 interior columns. These achievements are a testament to the commitment and expertise of the teams working on site to restore this ancient site to its former grandeur.
The Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mohamed Ismail Khaled, conducted an inspection visit to the Temple of Esna to assess the progress made in the restoration project. This regular monitoring approach reflects the importance attached to preserving Egypt’s cultural heritage and showcasing it on the international tourism scene.
Furthermore, the Temple of Edfu is also undergoing major renovation and upgrading work. The joint archaeological mission between the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the University of Würzburg in Germany revealed for the first time the original colours of the temple’s inscriptions during its restoration project. This project, funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, aims to restore the temple’s roof, clean and repair the interior walls, and conduct in-depth studies of the texts and decorations on the walls of the Holy of Holies and adjacent rooms.
These efforts to preserve and restore these ancient sites are not only essential to transmitting our cultural heritage to future generations, but also contribute to positioning Esna and Edfu as renowned tourist destinations on a global scale. Thanks to these restoration projects, these thousand-year-old temples will continue to amaze visitors from all over the world, thus perpetuating their historical and cultural heritage.
