“Since Mamadi Doumbouya came to power in Guinea, the human rights situation has become increasingly worrying, as highlighted in the latest Human Rights Watch report. While progress has been made with the organization of the trial of the September 28, 2009 massacre, highlighting some hope for justice in the country, other issues remain sources of concern for human rights defenders.
The cases of enforced disappearances of Foniké Menguè and Mamadou Billo Bah, two figures of Guinean civil society, as well as the repression of the media and journalists, are flagrant examples of the abuses of power committed under the current regime. But it is above all the deadly violence inflicted on demonstrators that shocks and raises questions about the legitimacy of the current government.
The poignant stories of the victims’ families, such as that of Amadou Korka Diallo, shot dead during a demonstration against fuel shortages, or of Ibrahima Touré, killed during a general strike, plunges us into the heart of the tragedy unfolding in Guinea. These young people, who were fighting for their rights and their future, lost their lives in tragic and unjustifiable circumstances.
The alarming figures put forward by local human rights organizations, reporting up to 59 people killed during demonstrations since Mamadi Doumbouya came to power, underscore the urgency of action to end this spiral of violence and impunity. It is imperative that the Guinean authorities take concrete steps to investigate these deaths, bring to justice those suspected of responsibility and ensure the protection of the fundamental rights of all citizens.
At this time of upheaval and uncertainty in Guinea, it is essential that the international community continue to closely monitor the situation and support efforts to promote justice, democracy and respect for human rights in the country. The history of Guinea should not be marked by violence and repression, but by the common quest for freedom, dignity and justice for all its citizens.”
