Drunk driving unfortunately remains an ever-present scourge on the roads, causing many accidents and loss of life each year in Côte d’Ivoire. The authorities recently launched the “December against drunk driving” operation to try to stem this problem.

At the heart of this problem is the individual responsibility of drivers. Alcohol tests carried out by the special road safety police too often reveal blood alcohol levels that far exceed the permitted limits. This irresponsible behavior endangers not only the driver’s life, but also that of other road users.

The testimonies of the drivers who are tested highlight a partial awareness of the seriousness of the situation. Some recognize the importance of reducing their alcohol consumption before getting behind the wheel, but others still seem to minimize the risks involved.

The Ivorian authorities do not hesitate to apply severe sanctions to deter offenders. Between fines, prison sentences and the withdrawal of points on the driving license, the consequences of drunk driving are clearly defined. This repressive approach is complemented by awareness-raising actions aimed at changing drivers’ behavior.

The ultimate goal is to halve the number of road accidents by 2025 in Côte d’Ivoire. To achieve this ambitious goal, concrete measures have been put in place, such as the introduction of the points-based license, the ban on importing vehicles over five years old and the deployment of video-verbalization.

It is essential that everyone is aware of their responsibility on the road. Alcohol and driving do not mix, and the consequences can be dramatic. By adopting responsible behavior, respecting the highway code and showing solidarity with each other, we all contribute to making our roads safer and saving lives.

Let us all be actors of change and commit to responsible, alcohol-free driving for everyone’s safety.
