The Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos was the scene of intense drama recently as traffic authorities and rescue agencies scrambled to rescue 18 individuals involved in a vehicle collision.

The accident, which occurred near Ilaje towards Iyana Oworonsoki, involved a light truck and a commercial bus, resulting in injuries to a group of passengers on board. Among the victims was a newly married young couple returning to the mainland from Ikoyi Marriage Registry.

The severity of the impact was attributed to a brake failure as the bus was travelling at excessive speed and hit the disabled truck. Sixteen passengers seated at the back of the bus, comprising 11 females and 5 males, sustained serious injuries and were quickly rushed to the Lagos State Trauma and Emergency Centre for urgent medical attention.

Two additional passengers, trapped at the front of the commercial bus, were rescued with severe fractures to their limbs and rushed to the Gbagada General Hospital for specialized treatment. The rapid evacuation of all the injured to medical facilities was made possible by the effective coordination between the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASABUS) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Response Unit (LASEMA LRU).

The joint efforts of the LASTMA teams, rescuers and concerned bystanders were commended in the success of the rescue operation. The Lagos State Law Enforcement Agency and Task Force secured the accident site, ensuring the smooth operation.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, Director General of LASTMA, expressed deep sympathy with the injured and wished them a speedy recovery. He stressed the importance of respecting speed limits and maintaining vehicles in perfect condition, especially the braking system, to avoid such tragedies.

This incident highlights the need for continued awareness on road safety and regular maintenance of vehicles for accident prevention. The speed and efficiency of the emergency response illustrated the importance of smooth coordination between different agencies to save lives in emergencies.
