In recent news, a major event took place in Rivers State, Nigeria: the death of Nkem ThankGod, a notorious criminal and cult leader. Aged 42 and known as 2man, ThankGod was responsible for a series of violent crimes, including the killing of several police officers, civilians, and youth leaders, as well as numerous kidnappings and attacks on oil infrastructure.
Hailing from Ogbologbolo in Ahoada West Local Government Area, ThankGod had been on the police’s most wanted list since 2021. His criminal activities spanned both Ahoada East and West regions, where he led the violent Greenlander cult group. The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Mohammed, confirmed that the terror unleashed by the suspect ended in an intelligence-led operation on Thursday, December 5, 2024, when he attempted to kidnap another victim in Ahoada East.
Although ThankGod was neutralized, his gang members managed to escape with injuries and efforts are underway to apprehend them. According to the police, ThankGod’s criminal activities included the killing of two police officers and several civilians, including husband and wife Rex Kiriki and Mrs. Abigail Victor. He was also involved in the killing of two Shell employees in Ahoada West, as well as a series of kidnappings, ransom extortions and car thefts. In addition, he was known for frequent attacks on government and oil installations.
This event underscores once again the need for a relentless fight against crime and the activities of violent cult groups that are prevalent in the region. Cooperation between law enforcement, intelligence agencies and the local population is essential to ensure the safety and protection of citizens. The death of Nkem ThankGod, while necessary to put an end to his atrocities, also raises questions about the deep roots of violence and crime that persist in some parts of Nigeria.
There is now an urgent need to strengthen security measures, improve the living conditions of local populations, and promote prevention and rehabilitation initiatives to effectively combat crime and extremism. Only a concerted effort and a holistic approach will address these challenges and ensure a peaceful and prosperous future for all.
