Problems and Demands of Nigerian Magistrates: Call for Government Action

Nigeria’s magistrates are expressing their concerns at a meeting in Calabar, highlighting the stagnation of some magistrates since 2015 and inadequate allowances. They are demanding the rehabilitation of courts, official vehicles and the payment of annual robe allowances. In the face of government inaction, a two-week strike has been announced for 13 November. It is crucial that measures are taken to ensure the safety and well-being of magistrates, support their essential role in the justice system and improve working conditions.
The Nigerian Magistrates Association recently expressed its concerns at its meeting in Calabar. Some of the issues raised include the stagnation of some magistrates since 2015, a monthly allowance of only ₦15,000, while their colleagues in other states enjoy much higher amounts of up to ₦250,000. In addition, the magistrates are demanding the rehabilitation of magistrates’ courts across the state as well as the provision of official vehicles to its members.

A crucial point raised by the magistrates is the failure of the state government to pay the annual robe allowances to its members, a practice that is prevalent across the country. This situation not only compromises the welfare of the magistrates but also jeopardizes their safety. Indeed, magistrates are often forced to use public transport, alongside litigants and suspects, exposing their lives to unnecessary risk.

In the face of these persistent challenges, the Magistrates Association has decided to take strong action by announcing a two-week strike action starting on November 13. This decision aims to draw attention to the legitimate demands of magistrates and to ensure respect for their rights and professional dignity.

It is imperative that the State Government take immediate steps to address the demands of magistrates and ensure their safety and well-being. Magistrates play a vital role in the justice system and deserve to be supported and respected. It is time for concrete actions to be taken to improve the working conditions of magistrates and ensure the efficiency of the justice system as a whole.
