Fatshimetrie: Commemorating the 76th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Tuesday, December 10, 2024, will mark a significant moment for the entire world as we celebrate the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This historic document, adopted in 1948, remains a fundamental pillar in the protection and promotion of the inalienable rights of every individual, regardless of their origin, religion, social status or any other discriminatory characteristic.

This year, the chosen theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Now”, resonates particularly in a global context marked by major socio-economic and political challenges. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Minister of Human Rights, Chantal Chambu Mwavita, presented an ambitious calendar of activities to mark this crucial event.

Under the theme “The sacredness of human life and social peace as a non-negotiable principle”, the Human Rights Week from 3 to 10 December 2024 will aim to raise awareness among the Congolese population of the importance of promoting and protecting human rights. As a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term, the DRC reaffirms its commitment to the sacredness of human life and social peace as essential vectors of sustainable development.

The election of the DRC as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term reflects the international recognition of the country as a key player in the promotion and protection of human rights globally. Alongside other countries elected for this term, the DRC is committed to actively contributing to the work of the Council to advance human rights on the international scene.

At a time when human rights are often put to the test around the world, the commemoration of the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant and committed to a more just and equitable society for all. Let us celebrate this precious legacy together and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the fundamental rights of every human being, today and for future generations.
