The scandal of Nigerian police officers detained for extortion has sparked outrage and highlighted the efforts of the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Adebola Hamzat to restore integrity in the force.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, led to the detention of the officers from Wednesday, October 30. Despite claims by human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who tried to take credit for the recovery of the illegally extorted funds, the police command has refuted the allegations.
The truth came out when the new AIG Adebola Hamzat, who assumed office on Monday, October 21, 2024, ordered Zonal X-Squad to commence an investigation into the matter. This swift action led to the recovery of the extorted funds and the detention of the corrupt officers.
It is crucial to underscore the determination displayed by AIG Hamzat to maintain high standards of integrity and professionalism in the police. His commitment to a zero tolerance policy on corruption and indiscipline, as established by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is commendable.
Despite Gwamnishu’s claims, the police command has maintained that the recovery of the extorted funds was the result of its own investigations and the prompt action taken by the new AIG.
It is also worth noting that Gwamnishu and his associates were summoned to appear for questioning as early as October 30, but did not respond until November 5. When they finally showed up at the command headquarters, Gwamnishu’s behaviour was described as disrespectful and disruptive.
This case illustrates the importance of law enforcement officers maintaining integrity and acting swiftly to combat all forms of corruption. Through the determined action of AIG Hamzat, the Nigerian Police is demonstrating its resolve to restore public confidence and uphold the honour of the profession.
