At the heart of a poignant and dramatic case, the story of the little victim sheds a harsh light on the painful realities that some children face. The account of the forensic pathologist, Dr Edith Onovore, highlights the extent of the injuries suffered by the young girl, allegedly assaulted by a certain Samuel Olaide.
In a heartbreaking testimony, the doctor described how the victim was taken to hospital three days after the incident, still suffering from profuse bleeding. A thorough examination revealed severe internal injuries, including bruising and the absence of the hymen, indicating violent penetration.
This chilling clinical picture was reinforced by the observation that the victim did not express any apparent pain, that her hymen had disappeared and that her panty liner and underwear were soaked with blood. According to the doctor, these types of injuries are consistent with forced penetration, leaving characteristic marks of trauma.
Defence counsel raised questions regarding the time between the alleged assault and the medical examination, which took place three to four days after the incident on 22 April 2022. When asked about the injuries observed, Dr Onovore highlighted bruising at the entrance to the vagina.
It is important to note that each rape victim presents with different physical reactions, but specific signs are generally present in the vaginal area. The severity of these signs may vary depending on the age of the victim and the duration of the assault.
In the case of this 10-year-old victim, Dr Onovore noted significant trauma, reflecting the violence she suffered. The victim’s harrowing account is an illustration of terror and distress. She said that Olaide, her neighbour, lured her into an abandoned building where he forcibly gagged her before sexually assaulting her.
This tragic incident, which occurred on April 19, 2022, in the Epe area of Lagos State, led authorities to charge Olaide with having unlawful sexual intercourse with a child, a crime punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Ultimately, this sad tale highlights the importance of protecting children from sexual assault and the need to sensitize society on these heartbreaking issues. It reminds us that vigilance and solidarity are essential to prevent such heinous acts and provide support to victims. Hope remains that justice will be served and steps will be taken to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
