The sad incident that occurred last Friday at about 8:30pm at the couple’s home on Fagbuyi Street, Ilogbo, Ota local government area of Ogun State has shocked many residents. The exact details of the altercation that led to the attack are still being investigated, but according to the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, Johnson poured petrol on his wife before deliberately setting her on fire using a match.
The tragedy unfolded after a heated exchange between the couple, according to eyewitnesses at the scene. A neighbour who witnessed the incident quickly alerted the victim’s relatives, who contacted the authorities.
Officers from the Ilogbo division intervened immediately and arrested Johnson, while the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital by witnesses to the attack. Odutola confirmed that the police are investigating the case as attempted murder, and Johnson remains in custody for further questioning.
This tragic incident once again highlights the growing concerns of domestic violence in the region. It also recalls a similar case in October 2024, when Motunrayo Olaniyi was accused of stabbing his wife, Olajumoke, to death during a violent argument in Lagos. According to reports, Olaniyi then locked his wife in a room before setting it on fire.
In the face of this alarming situation, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any signs of domestic violence before situations escalate into tragedy. These unspeakable acts highlight the need to increase awareness on the dangers of domestic violence and promote preventive measures to protect victims from these heinous acts.
