In a context where HIV awareness and prevention remain major issues in Côte d’Ivoire, HIV self-testing is emerging as a promising solution to reach the most reluctant populations. This practice, promoted by easy-to-use kits available in pharmacies, represents a significant step forward in the fight against the virus.
On this World AIDS Day, it is crucial to highlight the importance of self-testing to break down the barriers linked to stigma and fear of judgment. Testimonies such as that of Yannick, a 22-year-old who discovered his HIV status through a self-test, highlight the positive impact of this method on awareness and management of the disease.
The accessibility of self-tests, offered at an affordable cost or even free of charge in some specialized centers, is an essential lever to encourage early and regular HIV screening. Indeed, by reaching at-risk populations who are often reluctant to go to traditional health facilities, self-testing is an essential tool for achieving the objectives of preventing and treating the virus.
With more than 10,500 new infections recorded in 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire, 40% of which are among young people under 25, it is essential to continue awareness-raising and screening efforts. Professor Ehui Eboi, Coordinating Director of the National AIDS Control Program, points out that despite the progress made, HIV remains a daily reality requiring constant vigilance and ongoing actions to preserve the health of the population.
Ultimately, HIV self-testing is positioned as a valuable tool to strengthen the fight against the disease and provide concrete answers to current public health challenges in Côte d’Ivoire. By encouraging individual awareness and offering solutions adapted to the needs of the most vulnerable populations, this approach proves to be an essential pillar for building a healthier and safer future for all.
