The world is witnessing a growing movement for the defense of human rights, and women play a crucial role in this fight, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Congolese Synergy of Women Human Rights Defenders (SYCOFEDDH) is positioning itself as a key player in this cause by committing to working closely with the Congolese authorities to combat gender-based violence.
On the International Day of Women Human Rights Defenders, SYCOFEDDH made a strong commitment to protect women’s rights in the DRC, emphasizing the need for active cooperation with state authorities. The national coordinator, Desiderata Furaha Boji, affirmed the organization’s desire to improve the human rights situation, particularly those of women living in conflict zones.
To make this approach a reality, SYCOFEDDH organized, in partnership with the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO), an information day aimed at raising awareness of the crucial role of women human rights defenders and training them on the legal instruments protecting them. At the heart of the discussions, the humanitarian and security crisis in eastern DRC was addressed, highlighting the urgency of strengthening the capacities of women engaged in this fight.
It is essential that women human rights defenders be supported and trained, particularly on fundamental texts such as Resolution 1325 and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, essential tools for consolidating their actions and collaborating effectively with state authorities. This information day highlighted the crucial role of the authorities in protecting the rights of the population, thus recalling the importance of close cooperation between civil society and government institutions.
By formalizing its presence, the Congolese Synergy of Women Human Rights Defenders is taking a position as a key player in the promotion and defense of human rights in the DRC.
