On November 28, 2024, the first meeting of the National Steering Committee (COPIL) of the Investment Program for Forests and Savanna Restoration (PIFORES) was held in Kinshasa under the aegis of the Coordination Unit of the Investment Program for Forests (UC-PIF). This event marks an important step in the implementation of this ambitious program in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The objective of this meeting was to present the progress made since the launch of PIFORES, as well as to validate the Annual Work Plan and Budget (PTBA) for the year 2025. The members of the national COPIL approved this plan with a provisional budget of 36,019,572 US dollars, thus underlining the commitment and willingness to support this strategic program.
The National Coordinator of UC-PIF, Mr. Clément Vangu, highlighted the importance of PIFORES in responding to the environmental challenges facing the DRC. This program aims to combat deforestation, strengthen local capacities to address climate change, and improve the living conditions of populations in the areas concerned.
One of the particularities of PIFORES lies in its holistic approach, which actively involves local communities in the sustainable management of forests and land. By focusing on innovation and the development of agricultural and forestry value chains, the program aims to create sustainable economic opportunities while preserving the environment.
Taking into account the challenges of adaptation to climate change is also at the heart of PIFORES’ concerns. By supporting the National Adaptation Plan, the program contributes to strengthening the climate resilience of forest ecosystems and the biodiversity and agriculture sectors.
The decentralized implementation of PIFORES, with the creation of Provincial Steering Committees in each province concerned, illustrates the desire to engage all stakeholders at different administrative levels. This inclusive approach strengthens collaboration between local actors and promotes sustainable ownership of the program at the territorial level.
In conclusion, the Forest Investment and Savanna Restoration Program (PIFORES) offers an innovative and comprehensive vision to address environmental challenges in the DRC. By actively involving local communities, fostering innovation and promoting sustainable development, this program represents a unique opportunity to build a healthier and more prosperous future for all.
