Fatshimétrie: For a functional Armed Defense Reserve in the DRC
The issue of security in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains a major challenge for the stability of the Great Lakes region. The Center for Studies for Social Action (CEPAS) recently launched an urgent appeal to the Congolese government to implement concrete measures to make the Armed Defense Reserve operational and strengthen the effectiveness of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Community Recovery Program (PDDRCS).
During a conference-debate organized in Kinshasa, peacebuilding experts and CEPAS representatives stressed the importance of readjusting government actions to restore peace in the region. The advocacy highlights the need for a multilateral approach to the ongoing peace processes, particularly with regard to the Luanda and Nairobi agreements. These agreements, signed with Rwanda to guarantee regional security, require a firm commitment from stakeholders for effective implementation.
Nickson Kambale, peacebuilding expert, emphasizes the strategy to be adopted to ensure security and stability in the DRC. According to him, the operationalization of the Armed Reserve and the financing of the PDDRCS must be priorities for the Congolese government. These measures are essential to restore the confidence of local populations and ensure a peaceful transition to a more secure and prosperous future.
It is imperative for the DRC to strengthen its defense and security capacities to face internal and external threats to its territory. The establishment of the Defense Armed Reserve will professionalize the Congolese armed forces, improve their responsiveness in the event of a crisis and strengthen regional cooperation for lasting peace.
In conclusion, the issue of security in the DRC cannot be dissociated from the challenges of development and regional stability. The implementation of the measures recommended by CEPAS is an important step towards the consolidation of peace and security in the Great Lakes region. It is now up to the Congolese government to make courageous decisions and fully commit to building a safer future for all citizens of the DRC.
