The urgency of the response against Mpox in the Democratic Republic of Congo: the call for international solidarity

The health situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to be a concern for authorities and international organizations. A recent press conference organized by the United States Embassy highlighted the urgency of the response to monkeypox, more commonly known as Mpox, which is raging in the country. This disease, transmitted by monkeys, represents a major challenge for the region, and the support of the United States is essential to support the Congolese government in its fight against this emerging pandemic.

The joint efforts of the U.S. government and its local partners aim to strengthen surveillance, awareness, vaccination, and coordination of actions against Mpox. The financial and logistical support provided by the United States is crucial to stem the spread of the disease and protect vulnerable populations, particularly in forest areas where Mpox is endemic.

During this conference, Tom Van Boven of USAID underscored the continued commitment of the United States to support the Congolese government in its fight against Mpox. Despite the vaccine shortage reported by the Minister of Health, discussions are underway with the Gavi organization to obtain new doses and intensify vaccination of at-risk populations. Collaboration between different actors, including the CDC and USAID, is essential to ensure access to vaccines and strengthen response capacities to this potentially deadly disease.

Furthermore, the emergence of a sexually transmitted variant of Mpox in the province of South Kivu underscores the importance of remaining vigilant and implementing effective prevention measures. The alarming figures of confirmed cases and deaths recorded in the DRC show the urgency to act quickly and mobilize more resources to contain the spread of the virus.

Faced with this critical situation, the United States is calling for international solidarity to intensify efforts to fight Mpox in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The commitment of all stakeholders, whether national or international, is essential to overcome this public health challenge and protect the Congolese population from the ravages of this insidious disease.
