The links between politics and religion in the DRC: the landmark event at the Philadelphia Missionary Center

On Sunday, November 24, 2024, an unusual ceremony took place at the Philadelphia Mission Center in Kinshasa, where President Félix Tshisekedi participated in a special worship service. This spiritual appointment was of particular importance, given the political context and the close relationship between the president and the Philadelphia church.

The Philadelphia Mission Center, led by Apostle Roland Dalo, is an influential religious institution that plays an important role both spiritually and politically in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Indeed, this evangelical church is known for its proximity to President Tshisekedi, himself an active member of this community. In addition, Philadelphia faithful hold key positions in presidential offices, which strengthens the personal and institutional link between the church and the power in place.

The President’s visit to Philadelphia was part of the “Grande fête Bunda 21”, an annual program of fasting and prayer that mobilizes the faithful around different prayer intentions, including spiritual life, family, professional activities and the nation. This spiritual practice, punctuated by edifying preaching, is a highlight in the religious agenda of the Philadelphia church.

However, Apostle Dalo’s recent preaching has sparked debate and controversy. Indeed, his virulent remarks denouncing the misappropriation of public funds and overbilling in government projects have resonated with public opinion and within the political class. Apostle Dalo called for transparency and moralization of public life, even going so far as to express prayers for the assets illegally obtained by politicians to collapse.

These statements have caused a stir within the UDPS, the presidential party, and have been strongly criticized by some officials and activists. The reaction of Archbishop Ejiba Yamapia, representative of the Revival Churches in Congo, who publicly apologized to President Tshisekedi on behalf of the evangelical community, demonstrates the complexity of the relationship between political power and religious institutions in the DRC.

The presence of President Tshisekedi at the Philadelphia service, despite these tensions, raises questions about his implicit support for the positions taken by Apostle Dalo or his desire to ease relations. This symbolic visit reflects the central place occupied by the Philadelphia church in the Congolese religious landscape and highlights the influence of its spiritual leader on the national political scene.

In conclusion, the meeting between President Tshisekedi and the Philadelphia church illustrates the close links between political power and the religious world in the DRC, as well as the ethical and moral issues that animate Congolese societyIt also recalls the importance of dialogue and consultation between the different spheres of society to build a common future based on transparency, justice and respect for fundamental values.
