Fatshimetrie – The rehabilitation of the bridge over the Kibali River in Durba, Democratic Republic of Congo: a crucial step towards economic and social restoration
In the heart of the mining town of Durba, in the Haut-Uele province, the recent renovation of the bridge over the Kibali River represents a major turning point for the local community. After the dramatic collapse of this structure last February, devastating socio-economic consequences have impacted the region, including a significant increase in market prices. In addition, the tragic loss of several lives in drowning incidents during risky crossings has deeply affected the population.
Thanks to funding from the Specialized Management Organization of 0.3% of the turnover of Kibali GoldMines (DOT KIBALI), in close collaboration with the central and provincial authorities, the rehabilitation work on this 48.8-meter-long bridge with a capacity of 45 tons was successfully completed. Today, the return of traffic on this vital structure brings immense relief to the local population.
The reopening of the bridge initially reserved for pedestrians, motorcyclists and small vehicles marks a first step towards the normalization of trade and travel in the region. However, the full functionality of the bridge for heavy goods vehicles will require the completion of additional retaining wall works. With a view to sustainability, the provincial government is considering installing a weighbridge and providing a specific tax to ensure the protection and sustainability of this crucial infrastructure.
This significant step towards the full restoration of the Kibali River Bridge represents much more than a simple technical repair. It embodies the hope of an economic recovery for the region, by facilitating trade, promoting the mobility of local populations and helping to strengthen social ties within the community.
Ultimately, the rehabilitation of the Kibali River Bridge in Durba illustrates the ability of local stakeholders and private partners to come together to overcome challenges and work together towards a more prosperous and inclusive future for all.
