Traditional Conflict Mediation in North Kivu: An Effective Resolution Model

The Consultative Commissions for the Resolution of Customary Conflicts (CCRCC) of North Kivu have succeeded in resolving 81 conflicts out of 147 recorded since 2018, thanks to the support of MONUSCO. These commissions, bringing together local chiefs and community actors, promote dialogue and respect for traditions to restore peace in the region. Their effectiveness is based on a collaborative approach and the desire to modernize conflict resolution mechanisms. Since 2018, the Consultative Commissions for the Resolution of Customary Conflicts (CCRCC) of the North Kivu province have proven to be an effective mechanism for resolving customary disputes affecting the region. Bringing together customary leaders and other local actors, these commissions recently announced that they had resolved a total of 81 conflicts out of the 147 identified, marking a significant step towards the pacification of the territories.

The support of MONUSCO, particularly its Civil Affairs Section, played a crucial role in the functioning of the CCRCCs and in supporting the various stages of the conflict resolution process. This collaboration made it possible to identify areas of tension, organize local structures and set up effective mediation mechanisms.

Thanks to these combined efforts, tangible results have been achieved. Mwami Bauma Bitsibu, President of the CCRCC of the Bahunde chiefdom, testifies to the resolution of 8 conflicts in his region, emphasizing the importance of respecting the decisions taken and maintaining a constructive dialogue between the parties in conflict. This approach, based on respect for local traditions and customs, has helped restore peace in many communities.

The establishment of the CCRCC in 2018 was a crucial step in the management of customary conflicts in North Kivu. Under the leadership of the Congolese government, these structures were strengthened and gradually replaced the old arbitration commissions. This change of name, becoming Consultative Commissions for the Settlement of Customary Conflicts, demonstrates a desire to modernize and professionalize these bodies to respond effectively to current challenges.

Beyond figures and statistics, the work of the CCRCC highlights the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and the search for peaceful solutions to conflicts. By drawing on ancestral traditions and values, these commissions demonstrate that it is possible to find positive outcomes even in the most complex situations.
