The evaluation workshop of the peace agreement concluded in June 2023 between the Lesse and Nande communities, held in Mungaba, revealed significant progress in the region. Participants highlighted notable progress, including the return of more than 70% of displaced persons to their hometowns and the end of hostilities between local armed groups such as Chini ya Tuna and Mai-Mai FPP/AP.
These promising results have helped strengthen social cohesion and revive agricultural activities in the region. However, despite these advances, several challenges persist and threaten peacebuilding. These include the activism of ADF rebels, the weakness of State authority and the deplorable state of the Komanda-Luna road axis, which hinders movement and access to essential services.
Workshop participants made concrete commitments to overcome these obstacles and preserve the gains of the peace agreement. A comprehensive action plan was developed, focusing on strengthening state authority in the Walessse Vonkutu chiefdom and establishing mechanisms to facilitate the return of displaced persons.
The international community, including MONUSCO, has provided crucial support to this peace process, stressing the importance of collaboration between local and international actors to ensure stability and sustainable development in the region.
In summary, the peace agreement review workshop highlighted the significant progress made in the Mungaba region, while highlighting persistent challenges. It is essential that efforts continue to consolidate peace and stability, by putting in place concrete measures to overcome obstacles and promote sustainable development in the region.
