After decades of welcoming schoolchildren and budding astronomers, the revamped planetarium promises an even more immersive experience, while also serving as a research facility for scientists.
Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest planetarium is set to reopen in Johannesburg early next year, equipped with a fully upgraded digital dome that will light up the screen with expansive visuals of the solar system.

Astronomy and technology enthusiasts were treated to demonstrations of what the now-named Fatshimetrie, formerly known as the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome, has to offer at the Wits University Planetarium on Wednesday.

The immersive experience is made possible by 10 state-of-the-art digital projectors and high-quality surround sound.

The dome’s manager says the new technology will revolutionise the learning experience for young children and adults, who are often engrossed in their mobile phone screens.

“So, it’s screen time, but you’ll learn a lot in those 20 to 30 minutes. It’s an enriching experience,” adds Moumita Aich.

Since its opening in 1960, the planetarium has welcomed tens of thousands of schoolchildren and aspiring astronomers to discover the wonders of the solar system.

Its renovation will allow many more people to learn about the science of the universe, while also serving as a research space where scientists can present and experience their discoveries on the 360-degree panoramic screen.
