Managing truck trailer traffic in Kinshasa: a major challenge for the authorities

The regulation of truck trailer traffic on the national road number one in Kinshasa poses a major challenge in terms of road flow management and safety. Authorities are faced with challenges in enforcing truck traffic schedules, leading to traffic disruptions. Despite efforts, recalcitrant drivers compromise road safety. Collaboration between authorities, transporters and law enforcement is necessary to find sustainable solutions. Solving this problem involves all stakeholders in order to ensure the fluidity of traffic and the safety of road users in Kinshasa.
Kinshasa, November 7, 2024 – At the heart of the hustle and bustle of the Congolese capital lies a major challenge: regulating the traffic of trailer trucks on the national road number one (RN1) in Mont-Ngafula. This crucial issue raises fundamental questions about the management of road flows and the impact on urban mobility.

In this context, the Transport authorities are faced with a major dilemma: how to enforce the traffic schedules of trailer trucks, while ensuring the proper functioning of road infrastructure and the safety of users? Testimonies from road traffic police (PCR) actors highlight the challenges they face on a daily basis.

Faustin Oloma, Deputy Senior Commissioner of the PCR, emphasizes the importance of enforcing the time slots set for the circulation of trailer trucks. Indeed, these imposing machines can quickly cause traffic jams and disrupt the flow of traffic if their circulation is not adequately regulated. The initially established schedules, from 9 a.m. to 5 a.m. and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., were intended to limit the impact of these vehicles on general traffic.

However, despite the efforts made by the authorities to regulate the circulation of trailer trucks, obstacles persist. Drivers, sometimes recalcitrant, do not always respect these schedules and thus jeopardize road safety. This complex situation requires concerted action by the various stakeholders in order to find sustainable and effective solutions.

In this sense, it is essential that the provincial Minister of Transport and Urban Mobility and his team fully commit to resolving this problem. Close collaboration between the authorities, carriers and law enforcement is essential to ensure compliance with traffic rules and prevent incidents on national road number one.

In conclusion, the management of truck trailer traffic in Kinshasa represents a major challenge for the competent authorities. Given the urgency of the situation, it is essential to put in place concrete measures to ensure the safety of road users and guarantee the fluidity of traffic. A proactive and collaborative approach is essential to find viable and sustainable solutions to this complex problem, and thus contribute to the improvement of urban mobility in the Congolese capital.
