In a visionary initiative to ensure the supply of drinking water to residents of seven communes in the Congolese capital, Kinshasa, a team of civil engineers recently installed twelve impressive reinforced concrete pillars near the Makelele Bridge in Bandalungwa. These pillars, intended to support the piping of the drinking water distribution network managed by Regideso, mark a major step forward in efforts to meet the population’s growing water needs.

According to Relick Mvuezani, civil engineer in charge of the project, these concrete pillars will play a vital role in the distribution of water to the communes of Kinshasa-Ouest, including Kintambo, Ngaliema, Bandalungwa, Bumbu, Ngiri-Ngiri, Selembao and Makala. The construction of these pillars will support 1.40 meter diameter pipes, ensuring a reliable and efficient water supply throughout the region.

One of the motivations behind this project is the pressing need to respond to the city’s population explosion and the growing demand for drinking water. Currently, the western region of Kinshasa is supplied with drinking water from the N’djili plant, however, the needs of the population exceed the capacity of this structure. To overcome this situation, water will now be transported from the Regideso/Ozone plant, located in the commune of Ngaliema, thanks to modules 1, 2 and 3 currently being completed. These modules will supply the inhabitants of the western part of Kinshasa from the large Makala 1 reservoir, thus ensuring continuous access to drinking water.

The ingenuity and careful planning of this infrastructure demonstrate the authorities’ commitment to meeting the population’s essential drinking water needs. By focusing on sustainable and innovative solutions, this project not only contributes to ensuring access to a vital resource for all, but also to strengthening the urban infrastructure of the city of Kinshasa.

In conclusion, the reinforced concrete pillars near the Makelele Bridge in Bandalungwa represent a significant step towards a future where every resident of Kinshasa can benefit from a reliable and quality drinking water supply. This project embodies the importance of investing in critical infrastructure for the well-being and sustainable development of urban communities, and is an example to follow for other similar initiatives in the region.
