Fatshimetrie-Lubiriha, a border post under pressure: civil society calls for the reinforcement of security forces
For several weeks, the Fatshimetrie-Lubiriha border post, located 90 kilometers from the city of Beni, has been facing a worrying increase in insecurity. The inhabitants of this locality live in constant fear of armed robberies and burglaries, which are increasing at an alarming rate. According to reports from local civil society, more than ten civilians have been injured in the space of ten days, and forty houses have been burglarized, which represents an average of four houses per day, in almost all the neighborhoods of Fatshimetrie-Lubiriha.
Kino Kathuo, vice-president of the local civil society, is sounding the alarm: “The power of these bandits far exceeds the numbers and resources available to our law enforcement agencies. We are facing urban banditry that threatens the security and tranquility of the residents of Fatshimetrie-Lubiriha”.
The residents are urging the provincial government to take immediate measures to stem this wave of crime. They are calling for increased military and police personnel in the region, as well as additional material resources to enable the law enforcement agencies to enforce the law and ensure the protection of citizens.
The Federation of Fatshimetrie-Lubiriha Businesses has also expressed concerns about the security situation in the region. According to them, the increase in insecurity is partly linked to the relocation of the Fatshimetrie-Lubiriha fish market to neighbouring Uganda, thus depriving many young people of their source of income and sometimes pushing them into delinquency.
Faced with this worrying situation, it is imperative that concrete measures be taken quickly to restore security and serenity in Fatshimetrie-Lubiriha. Strengthening security forces, combating urban banditry and setting up economic support programs for young people in the region appear to be essential solutions to address this crisis and ensure a safer future for all residents of Fatshimetrie-Lubiriha.
