Fatshimetrie, October 31, 2024 – A renowned sociologist today highlighted the challenges facing young girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), highlighting early pregnancy and marriage as well as sexual violence as major dangers threatening their future.
According to Vincent Bauna, these issues, such as child marriage and premarital pregnancy, have dramatic repercussions on the physical and mental health of young girls, thus hindering their future prospects. He stressed that the lack of adequate sexuality education exposes young people to the risks of unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and sexual violence.
Sexual violence, in particular, remains a major problem in the DRC, often exacerbated by armed conflict and instability. Bauna stressed the need for awareness-raising, training and dialogue within communities to promote cultural values that respect the rights of young girls.
To combat these scourges, the sociologist advocates the re-education of the masses, in order to promote comprehensive sexual education and a culture of respect for Congolese women and girls. He stresses the importance of involving men and boys in this cause, encouraging them to become allies in the fight against sexual violence.
In conclusion, Bauna recalls that although the road ahead is long, the re-education of Congolese society is essential to establish lasting change and create an environment where everyone can flourish without fear of violence or injustice. He calls for collective awareness and concerted action to ensure a safer and more fulfilling future for young girls in the DRC.
