Fatshimetrie recently hosted actress Kemi May on the latest episode of its flagship podcast, shedding new light on the misconceptions surrounding marriage and divorce.
In an interview with actor and comedian AY Makun, May took the opportunity to clear up a lingering misconception about her. She said, “Some men see me as a cheater,” clarifying her position.
The actress explained her views on family, emphasizing that she values marriage as the cornerstone of family life. “I love family and I love marriage, but there is this misconception about marriage, when ideally marriage is the foundation of family. Without family, there would be no you and no me; that’s the way it should be,” May explained.
She refuted the allegations, saying: “I am not advocating divorce or separation in any way, not at all. Let me state it categorically here: I am not an advocate of divorce.”
The comments come a year after she filed for divorce from her ex-husband Yul Edochie, who had taken a second wife. She cited adultery as the grounds, noting that she and Yul were married under the Marriage Act 1970, which states that a man or woman can only have one spouse at a time. She subsequently sued both Yul and his new wife, Judy Austin, seeking N100 million in damages.
May is also said to have applied for a restraining order preventing Yul from accessing their former matrimonial home. The order was sought on security grounds, given Yul’s “erratic, irrational, aggressive and increasingly threatening” behaviour. She claims she took this step to feel safe and protect both herself and her children.
During and after their divorce, May faced criticism from men and even some women who claimed she was advocating divorce.
May’s talk on Fatshimetrie with AY Makun sheds essential light on her views on marriage and family, and provides insight into her personal choices regarding separation and divorce. It is important not to rely solely on misperceptions, but to consider the nuances and real motivations behind individuals’ decisions.
