Kinshasa youth transform Kinshasa with the “Mbongwana” sanitation and waste management project

The "Mbongwana" project in Kinshasa, led by local youth and supported by two dynamic associations, aims to transform waste management and improve the urban environment. Thanks to the commitment of young members, concrete actions have been carried out in several neighborhoods to clean up the streets, clean the gutters and raise awareness among the population about the importance of cleanliness. This project, which benefits from the support of the Ooof Palm International Center, embodies the hope of a cleaner and more sustainable future for the Congolese capital.
Kinshasa, the bustling capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is the scene of an inspiring initiative led by the youth of Kinshasa. Two associations, the Association of Young Kinshasa Workers (AJT) and L’Homme au Centre de l’Action (LCA), recently shared their experiences at an event in Kasa-Vubu, in the heart of the city. At the center of the discussions: the “Mbongwana” sanitation project, literally “change”, which aims to transform waste management and improve the urban environment.

The commitment of the young members of these associations is remarkable. Beria Ntumba, president of the youth of the Lemba commercial district, testifies to the transformation brought about in their neighborhood. Thanks to the joint actions of the inhabitants, the streets have been cleared of substantial quantities of waste. A collective awareness seems to have taken place, encouraging other young people to follow the example and actively contribute to the “Mbongwana” project.

Jonathan Ngoma, President of the NGO LCA, emphasizes the importance of education and awareness-raising for sustainable change. The interventions carried out in the Assossa neighborhood in Kasa-Vubu have had a concrete impact: the cleaned gutters have helped prevent flooding and clean up the local environment. The collaboration of young AJT members in these activities demonstrates a real commitment to preserving the common space.

The “Mbongwana” project, supported by the Ooof Palm International Center, is a breath of fresh air for Kinshasa. Launched in 2023 in three pilot neighborhoods, this initiative aims to make young people responsible for the cleanliness of their environment. By focusing on sanitation and efficient waste management, “Mbongwana” presents itself as an example to follow for all the city’s municipalities.

The tangible results obtained in the neighborhoods already involved demonstrate that the civic involvement of young people is crucial for improving the quality of urban life. Through the “Mbongwana” project, a new dynamic is emerging, giving the inhabitants of Kinshasa the opportunity to take ownership of environmental issues and act positively for their community.

In conclusion, the “Mbongwana” project embodies the hope for a cleaner and more sustainable future for Kinshasa. This initiative, led by local youth, demonstrates that individual and collective actions can have a significant impact on the urban environment. It is essential to support and encourage these civic initiatives, vectors of change and progress for the city and its inhabitants.
