The current situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and more specifically in the mining area of the Djugu territory in Ituri, is marked by events of undeniable gravity. The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) recently regained control of several villages occupied by the armed groups Zaire and CODECO, marking a significant step forward in the process of stabilizing the region.
According to official information provided by the FARDC spokesperson in Ituri, the localities of Galay, Lodjo, Pili Pili, Beba, Plito and Mulanday are now under the control of government forces. These victories were obtained after intense fighting during which the Zaire militiamen were dislodged from the region. These clashes resulted in losses on the side of the armed groups, but the precise toll remains to be determined.
A most disturbing discovery was made during these operations: an underground dungeon used by the Zaire militia was uncovered in Mulanday. This sinister place bears witness to the violence and barbarity of which these armed groups are capable, and underlines the urgent need to dismantle these devastating militias in order to restore peace and security in the region.
These recent advances by the FARDC have allowed the return of more than seven thousand displaced persons who had fled the violence in Mongwalu. This gradual resumption of control of the villages occupied by local armed groups constitutes an important step towards the stabilization of the region and the return to normal life for local populations.
It should be noted that this ongoing operation also aims to secure the entire mining area, the scene of recurring conflicts between the CODECO and Zaire armed groups for control of natural resources, particularly gold. By ending the hold of these militias on the region, the military authorities are seeking to create the conditions conducive to the return of the population to the Banyari-Kilo sector, where thirteen out of fifteen groups were previously under the occupation of armed groups.
Thus, despite the challenges and difficulties encountered on the ground, the efforts made by the FARDC to restore order and security in the Djugu region of Ituri are to be welcomed. These advances mark a glimmer of hope for the local populations formerly confronted with the terror and instability caused by armed groups. Let us hope that these military actions will contribute to establishing lasting peace and guaranteeing a more peaceful future for all the inhabitants of this region scarred by armed conflict.
