Fatshimetrie, October 28, 2024 – The urgent issue of electricity supply in Kisangani, an emblematic city in the Tshopo region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, was recently at the heart of discussions between the Congolese Head of State and the caucus of national elected officials of the Grand Orientale region. This issue, vital for the economic and social development of the region, requires special attention and concrete solutions.
According to the statements of MP Theoveul Lotika, during these fruitful discussions with the President of the Republic, the need to renovate the Tshopo hydroelectric power plant was highlighted. Currently, this plant presents major challenges, with one turbine out of service and another only partially providing the 5.1 megawatts needed by the population of Kisangani. To address this critical situation, it is estimated that an investment of at least US$45 million would be required for the rehabilitation and proper functioning of this crucial structure for the region’s energy supply.
National deputies have made concrete requests to the President, stressing the urgent need for rapid intervention to resolve this energy crisis in Kisangani. Elected officials are optimistic about the favorable evolution of the situation, with concrete proposals currently under discussion and a mutual understanding of the issues by all stakeholders.
A glimmer of hope seems to be on the horizon, with discussions underway regarding the repair of damage caused by the illicit activities of certain neighboring countries. Progress has already been made, notably with partial funding from FRIVAO for infrastructure works. However, it is necessary to consider longer-term solutions to guarantee a stable supply of electricity for the inhabitants of Kisangani and the surrounding region.
The Governor of Tshopo Province highlighted the direct impact of this energy crisis on the local economy, highlighting the negative consequences on commercial and industrial activities. However, despite these challenges, he remains confident in the authorities’ ability to find sustainable solutions to revive the regional economy and improve the quality of life of residents.
In conclusion, the energy situation in Kisangani represents a major challenge to be met, but with strong political will and close collaboration between local and national stakeholders, it is possible to envisage a brighter future for the Tshopo region. Implementing effective solutions to renovate the hydroelectric plant and ensure a stable supply of electricity is a crucial issue for the sustainable development of the region and the well-being of its population.
