Fatshimetrie has just conducted an in-depth survey among the town’s residents, revealing a critical situation regarding transport fares. In recent weeks, prices have increased significantly, plunging the population into great precariousness.
The testimonies collected in the Keffi region are alarming. Fares have increased by up to 70% in recent weeks, leaving bus stations almost empty, with few vehicles and passengers. The residents are unanimous: the government must intervene urgently to reduce the price of petrol and thus alleviate the difficulties faced by the population.
Taxi drivers are themselves facing unprecedented difficulties. Yakubu Hassan, a taxi driver at Keffi Central Station, testifies to the considerable increases in fares. Travelers must now pay ₦3,500 to travel from Keffi to Lafia, compared to ₦2,500 previously. Fares to Abuja have increased from ₦1,000 to ₦1,500, to Jos from ₦4,000 to ₦6,000, and to Akwanga from ₦1,500 to ₦2,000.
This spike in fares is directly linked to the recent increase in the price of petrol, which is making life even more difficult for taxi drivers. Residents of Keffi are expressing their distress and calling for help, highlighting the impact on the movement of goods and services in the area.
The government is urged to take swift and effective measures to provide relief to the population. The increase in transport fares is hampering the daily lives of residents, sometimes forcing them to cancel their trips due to lack of sufficient means. It is imperative that concrete actions are taken to ensure affordable access to petroleum products and regulate the operations of transporters.
The current situation is untenable for many Nigerians who feel abandoned in the face of these constant increases. There is an urgent need for solutions to alleviate the suffering of the population and ensure equitable access to transport services. The government has a crucial role to play in ensuring the well-being of its citizens and preventing a major social crisis.
