Fatshimetrie, 28 October 2024 (ACP). The recent parliamentary elections in Georgia have sparked strong reactions and accusations of electoral interference by the Kremlin, creating a climate of protest and doubts about the legitimacy of the results.
The spokesman for the Presidency of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, vigorously rejected the allegations of interference, calling them unfounded and stating that no intervention had taken place. However, incidents during the vote, such as the alleged attempts at coercion in Marneuli, have caused confusion and raised questions about the integrity of the electoral process.
For its part, the German Foreign Ministry, through its spokesman Sebastian Fischer, condemned the “significant irregularities” observed during the elections in Georgia, denouncing in particular intimidation of voters and violations of the secrecy of the vote. This reaction underlines the importance of respecting international standards for democratic elections.
In response to criticism from the Georgian opposition over an alleged pro-Russian authoritarian drift, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze reaffirmed Georgia’s commitment to its European integration. He stressed that the main objective of Georgian foreign policy remains membership in the European Union, and pledged to do everything possible to ensure that the country fully realizes this perspective by 2030.
Georgia finds itself at a crossroads between internal and external pressures, democratic aspirations and geopolitical realities in these major political challenges. The future of the country and its relationship with the European Union seem more uncertain than ever, in a context of tensions and controversies that underline the challenges facing the Georgian nation.
