Kinshasa, October 27, 2024 (Fatshimetrie) – In the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a talented percussionist named Jonas Muwenge, also known as Steroy, is developing a remarkable initiative to offer free drumming lessons to children aged 6 to 15. In Masina, in eastern Kinshasa, Jonas Muwenge has set up a training center called “Boya Toyekola” with the laudable aim of combating juvenile delinquency by offering an enriching alternative to the capital’s youth. Since 2017, Steroy has been investing his body and soul in supporting young talents. Around 100 children have benefited from this opportunity, offered in a spirit of generosity and sharing. Through this introduction to drums, Steroy’s goal is not only to pass on his musical know-how, but also to nourish the dreams and aspirations of these children, by keeping them away from the dangers of the street and offering them a positive outlook.

This project, driven by Steroy’s passion and commitment, plays an essential role in preventing juvenile delinquency and offers a future perspective to these young people who are often deprived of other opportunities. By placing music at the heart of this educational approach, Steroy values the intelligence and creativity of children, while promoting their personal and artistic development.

Despite the limited resources at his disposal, Steroy aspires to expand his music school and provide more equipment to allow young talents to fully flourish. He is therefore appealing to the competent authorities to support this initiative and guarantee an environment conducive to the learning and development of apprentice drummers.

The art of drumming, central to the music of the DRC, is of particular importance in the Congolese music scene, contributing to enriching the sounds and rhythms that characterize this country with multiple musical talents. Steroy emphasizes the fundamental role of the drummer in the dynamics of a concert and highlights the power of the drums in the overall musical construction.

Introduced to the art of drumming within a local church, Steroy has followed a remarkable path alongside renowned Congolese musicians, thus actively contributing to the country’s music scene. His recent success in a drummers’ competition has earned him additional recognition, reinforcing his legitimacy as a key figure in the Congolese music scene.

As part of his activities at “Boya Toyekola”, Steroy is enthusiastically preparing the second edition of his festival “Beta to Bina”, dedicated to the promotion of drummers from the city of Kinshasa. This festival, a true celebration of the talent and creativity of young percussionists, promises to offer a unique opportunity to highlight these emerging artists and to promote their contribution to the artistic wealth of the Congolese capital.

In short, Steroy’s initiative embodies hope and perseverance, offering the children of Kinshasa an alternative, enriching and meaningful path. Thanks to his commitment and passion for music, Steroy opens promising horizons to young Congolese talents, thus contributing to forging a new generation of talented and committed artists.
