Fatshimetrie, October 25, 2024 – Agriculture in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to benefit from significant government support, as evidenced by the recent handover of inputs and seeds to farmers in the village of Abata, located 36 km from the city of Kisangani. This initiative, led by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Grégoire Mutshail Mutomb Kangaj, was part of the 2024-2025 agricultural campaign.
The event was marked by the handover of a wide range of inputs, fertilizers and seeds for crops such as maize, rice and other agricultural products. In addition, the Minister symbolically handed over cassava cuttings as well as a large batch of farming equipment, including holly trees, watering cans, sprayers and spades, intended to support farmers throughout the new agricultural campaign.
The provision of 5 high-end tractors, equipped with all the necessary accessories, in the Tshopo province clearly demonstrates the government’s commitment to promoting agriculture as a pillar of economic diversification. This action is in line with the vision of the Head of State and the Suminwa government to enhance the agricultural sector and contribute to the sustainable development of the country.
During this handover, agronomists, agri-multipliers and farmers expressed their gratitude to Minister Mutshail, while sharing the challenges they face on a daily basis, including insecurity in their cocoa plantations and problems related to diseases affecting the quality of their production. They also stressed the need for more support to overcome these obstacles and improve their working conditions.
In short, this government approach marks an important step forward towards strengthening the agricultural sector in the DRC, by providing farmers with the means and resources necessary to increase their productivity and contribute to the country’s food security. It demonstrates the authorities’ commitment to supporting rural development and promoting more sustainable and competitive agriculture. ACP/JF
