Strengthening efforts for peace and stability in eastern DRC

The eastern Democratic Republic of Congo remains the scene of violent clashes, with the M23 rebel group continuing its offensives, despite a ceasefire negotiated as part of the Luanda process. France, vigorously opposed to this escalation, urges the parties to immediately respect their commitments to achieve a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the DRC, while emphasizing the urgent need to protect civilian populations and meet their growing humanitarian needs. It therefore calls for an immediate end to the violence to guarantee the safety of civilians and the continuation of humanitarian operations.

Despite diplomatic efforts deployed at the Luanda meeting last July, the situation on the ground remains volatile, with reports of new attacks by the M23, particularly in the town of Kalembe. The fighting is intensifying, putting the lives of many people at risk and creating a worrying humanitarian crisis.

In parallel, discussions between Rwandan and Congolese experts are planned in Luanda to assess a proposal to ease tensions and find lasting solutions to this deadly conflict. It is imperative that all parties assume their responsibilities and fully engage in a peace and reconciliation process to end the suffering of civilians.

Despite the persistent obstacles and challenges, it is essential to maintain hope for a peaceful resolution to this conflict, and to continue to support all efforts aimed at establishing peace in this region torn apart by violence. The international community, local actors and humanitarian organizations must join forces to ensure the safety and well-being of the populations affected by this devastating conflict.
