Despite the accusations, President Tinubu keeps Matawalle in office, emphasizing confidence in his innocence. The mutual allegations between Matawalle and Governor Lawal highlight the power struggles within the Nigerian government. This case highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in ensuring democratic governance.
The Matawalle case, which is facing allegations of funding banditry in Zamfara State, remains at the forefront of Nigerian politics. Despite the allegations, President Bola Tinubu has chosen to retain Matawalle in his government, with the presidency dismissing the allegations as unfounded.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, said President Tinubu had no reason to sack Matawalle, noting that extensive investigations by the National Security Adviser (NSA) found no evidence to support the allegations.

In an interview on Arise TV, Onanuga said: “I contacted the NSA to find out if he was aware of the allegations, he said no. We investigated and they were found to be false.”

Matawalle and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal have publicly accused each other of involvement in terrorism and banditry in the state. When confronted with the accusations, Matawalle challenged Lawal to swear on the Quran that he was not involved in criminal activities in Zamfara to clear his name.

Despite these public allegations, Tinubu’s decision to retain Matawalle in office underscores the administration’s confidence in his innocence. Onanuga noted, “The president has heard many stories about him, but the fact that he remains in government shows that these allegations have been investigated and found to be unfounded.”

This case reveals the complexity of political relationships and power struggles within the Nigerian government. Matawalle’s continued tenure despite the allegations speaks volumes about the political games at play, the rivalries between different actors, and the importance of alliances in preserving power and influence.

It is essential to remain vigilant in the face of such cases that can have a significant impact on the stability and governance of the country. Citizens have the right to hold their leaders accountable and demand transparency in the management of public affairs, in order to ensure democratic and responsible governance for the well-being of all.

In a world where trust in political institutions is constantly tested, it is imperative that government leaders act with integrity, courage and responsibility to ensure the credibility and legitimacy of their actions.
