The controversial presidential initiative: Should a new constitution be drafted in the DRC?

President Felix Tshisekedi
President Felix Tshisekedi’s desire to draft a new Constitution in the Democratic Republic of Congo has sparked passionate reactions within Congolese civil society and the political opposition. While the Head of State has stated that he wants to provide the country with a fundamental law drafted by Congolese people and adapted to national realities, some voices are being raised to contest this initiative, which they consider to be inopportune and premature.

The New Congolese Civil Society, represented by its coordinator, Jonas Tshiomblea, believes that the current context, marked by a state of siege in several regions of the country, does not allow us to calmly consider a constitutional change of such magnitude. According to him, it is essential to prioritize the stability and security of the country before considering major institutional reforms.

For its part, the Lamuka political platform, led by Martin Fayulu, firmly expresses its opposition to the presidential project. For Prince Epenge, spokesperson for Lamuka, the current Constitution has helped cement the unity of the Congolese people and should not be called into question. He recalls that during the previous presidential term, the population had massively rejected any modification of the Constitution, and that this rejection would be just as strong under the mandate of Felix Tshisekedi.

This controversy highlights the complex political and social issues facing the Democratic Republic of Congo. The question of drafting a new Constitution is not limited to a simple legal exercise, but raises crucial questions about the democratic future of the country, the legitimacy of institutions and citizen participation in political life.

It is essential that this debate be conducted in an open, inclusive and transparent manner, taking into account the diverse opinions within Congolese society. Democracy cannot be truly representative and legitimate without the active participation of all stakeholders. Major political decisions must be taken in accordance with the law, but also with respect for the aspirations and concerns of the Congolese people.

In conclusion, the issue of drafting a new Constitution in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a crucial issue that deserves in-depth reflection and open debate. It is essential that the various stakeholders can express their points of view in a constructive manner and that this approach contributes to strengthening democracy and national unity.
