On Monday, October 21, torrential rain fell on the Mahagi territory, causing considerable damage. The FEPACO Nzambe Malamu church, located in the Uriwo village, in the War Palara chiefdom, was hit hard. The wall of the church collapsed on members of a choir, including children in full rehearsal, including schoolchildren from the Uriwo primary school. Two victims unfortunately lost their lives at the scene of the accident, while others were injured and were taken for medical treatment.

Mahagi civil society, represented by Innocent Wabekudu, also reports that this natural disaster caused material damage, affecting private homes, latrines and even the fence of the FADS Mahagi radio station. In addition, a young man was swept away by the waters of the Arwoto River, and a car was swept away in Paida, on the border between the DRC and Uganda. Fortunately, the driver and the car were found safe and sound.

It is important to note that this tragedy had an economic impact on the local population, with the destruction of rural products. The province of Ituri is facing the return of the rainy season, unfortunately causing human losses not only in Mahagi, but also in Bunia and its surroundings.
