The Governor of Enugu State, Nigeria, recently announced an increase in the minimum wage for workers in the state. The move followed the presentation of the report of the committee tasked with reviewing the state’s minimum wage at the Government House in Enugu.
Governor Mbah, while expressing his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers, said: “I am happy to announce a new minimum wage for workers in Enugu State. This move is a testament to our commitment to their welfare, which remains a top priority.”
He stressed that the increase was based on the administration’s belief that work is a key driver of economic prosperity. According to Governor Mbah, well-paid workers play a key role in driving economic growth and wealth creation in Enugu State.
He urged workers to return the favor by being productive at work.
The organized trade union in the state thanked the governor for the unprecedented move, which puts the state minimum wage above the approved national minimum wage. They also commended Mbah for the continued payment of the ₦25,000 allowance to workers for over 10 months, pending the harmonization of the new minimum wage.
Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said the favour confirms that Mbah is the most worker-friendly governor to ever rule the state as he puts his words into action.
The salary increase is a testament to the administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers in Enugu State, and sets an example in recognizing and valuing work. Attention to workers’ salaries will not only contribute to their personal well-being but also to the economic prosperity of the state as a whole.
